Hope & Change Deconstructed

Dick Morris wrote an article entitled The Obama Presidency: Here Comes Socialism which I think beautifully deconstructs what President Obama's Hope and Change strategies are and what they will mean for Americans. He writes:

"Just as the stars were aligned for Wilson, Roosevelt, Johnson and Reagan,
they are aligned for Obama. Simply put, we enter his administration as
free-enterprise, market-dominated, laissez-faire America. We will shortly become
like Germany, France, the United Kingdom, or Sweden -- a socialist democracy in
which the government dominates the economy, determines private-sector priorities
and offers a vastly expanded range of services to many more people at much
higher taxes.... (however, I'm sure this is good news to short-sighted Obama acolytes)

Obama will accomplish his agenda of "reform" under the rubric of "recovery." Using the electoral mandate bestowed on a Democratic Congress by restless voters and the economic power given his administration by terrified Americans, he will change our country fundamentally in the name of lifting the depression. His stimulus packages won't do much to shorten the downturn -- although they will make it less painful -- but they will do a great deal to change our nation. (Well, he was elected based on change, right? He going to deliver change but will you like the changes?)

In implementing his agenda, Barack Obama will emulate the example of Franklin D. Roosevelt. (Not the liberal mythology of the New Deal, but the actuality of what it accomplished.) When FDR took office, he was enormously successful in averting a total collapse of the banking system and the economy. But his New Deal measures only succeeded in lowering the unemployment rate from 23 percent in 1933, when he took office, to 13 percent in the summer of 1937. It never went lower. And his policies of over-regulation generated such business uncertainty that they triggered a second-term recession. Unemployment in 1938 rose to 17 percent and, in 1940, on the verge of the war-driven recovery, stood at 15 percent. (These data and the real story of Hoover's and Roosevelt's missteps, uncolored by ideology, are available in The Forgotten Man by Amity Shlaes, copyright 2007.)
But in the name of a largely unsuccessful effort to end the Depression, Roosevelt passed crucial and permanent reforms that have dominated our lives ever since, including Social Security, the creation of the Securities and Exchange Commission, unionization under the Wagner Act, the federal minimum wage and a host of other fundamental changes.

Obama's record will be similar, although less wise and more destructive. He will begin by passing every program for which liberals have lusted for decades, from alternative-energy sources to school renovations, infrastructure repairs and technology enhancements. These are all good programs, but they normally would be stretched out for years. But freed of any constraint on the deficit -- indeed, empowered by a mandate to raise it as high as possible -- Obama will do them all rather quickly.

But it is not his spending that will transform our political system, it is his tax and welfare policies. In the name of short-term stimulus, he will give every American family (who makes less than $200,000) a welfare check of $1,000 euphemistically called a refundable tax credit. And he will so sharply cut taxes on the middle class and the poor that the number of Americans who pay no federal income tax will rise from the current one-third of all households to more than half. In the process, he will create a permanent electoral majority that does not pay taxes, but counts on ever-expanding welfare checks from the government. The dependency on the dole, formerly limited in pre-Clinton days to 14 million women and children on Aid to Families with Dependent Children, will now grow to a clear majority of the American population. (But, this will not be a bad thing for the Obama acolytes that I know. They'll take $1000 now without thinking of the long-term implications)

Will he raise taxes? Why should he? With a congressional mandate to run the deficit up as high as need be, there is no reason to raise taxes now and risk aggravating the depression. Instead, Obama will follow the opposite of the Reagan strategy. Reagan cut taxes and increased the deficit so that liberals could not increase spending. Obama will raise spending and increase the deficit so that conservatives cannot cut taxes. And, when the economy is restored, he will raise taxes with impunity, since the only people who will have to pay them would be rich Republicans. (Except all republican's aren't rich. Although this less financially fortunate republican was hoping to be)

In the name of stabilizing the banking system, Obama will nationalize it. Using Troubled Asset Relief Program funds to write generous checks to needy financial institutions, his administration will demand preferred stock in exchange. Preferred stock gets dividends before common stockholders do. With the massive debt these companies will owe to the government, they will only be able to afford dividends for preferred stockholders -- the government, not private investors. So who will buy common stock? And the government will demand that its bills be paid before any profits that might materialize are reinvested in the financial institution, so how will the value of the stocks ever grow? Devoid of private investors, these institutions will fall ever more under government control. (Wow, Uncles Sam is going to have banks by the seminal gonads and private investors will be a thing of the past...bye, bye to the dreams of those of us who hoped to prosper in the free market)

Obama will begin the process by limiting executive compensation. Then he will urge restructuring and lowering of home mortgages in danger of default (as the feds have already done with Citibank). (What about people who have maintained their mortgages -- They should be penalized for being responsible citizens)

Then will come guidance on the loans to make and government instructions on the types of enterprises to favor. God grant that some Blagojevich type is not in charge of the program, using his power to line his pockets. The United States will find itself with an economic system comparable to that of Japan, where the all-powerful bureaucracy at MITI (Ministry of International Trade and Industry) manages the economy, often making mistakes like giving mainframe computers priority over the development of laptops.

But it is the health care system that will experience the most dramatic and traumatic of changes. The current debate between erecting a Medicare-like governmental single payer or channeling coverage through private insurance misses the essential point. Without a lot more doctors, nurses, clinics, equipment and hospital beds, health resources will be strained to the breaking point. The people and equipment that now serve 250 million Americans and largely neglect all but the emergency needs of the other 50 million will now have to serve everyone. And, as government imposes ever more Draconian price controls and income limits on doctors, the supply of practitioners and equipment will decline as the demand escalates. Price increases will be out of the question, so the government will impose health care rationing, denying the older and sicker among us the care they need and even barring them from paying for it themselves. (Rationing based on income and price will be seen as immoral.) (This is when the Obama acolytes will regret their decision. Because loved ones will suffer negative or maybe even fatal effects....Was Big Mama's life worth that $1000 stimulus check?)

And Obama will move to change permanently the partisan balance in America. He will move quickly to legalize all those who have been in America for five years, albeit illegally, and to smooth their paths to citizenship and voting. He will weaken border controls in an attempt to hike the Latino vote as high as he can in order to make red states like Texas into blue states like California. By the time he is finished, Latinos and African-Americans will cast a combined 30 percent of the vote. If they go by top-heavy margins for the Democrats, as they did in 2008, it will assure Democratic domination (until they move up the economic ladder and become good Republicans.(This is the REAL REASON for Obama's speed of light political ascention. The DNC and Liberal elitist knew this....It was politically calculated)

And he will enact the check-off card system for determining labor union representation, repealing the secret ballot in union elections. The result will be to raise the proportion of the labor force in unions up to the high teens from the current level of about 12 percent.

Finally, he will use the expansive powers of the Federal Communications Commission to impose "local" control and ownership of radio stations and to impose the "fairness doctrine" on talk radio. The effect will be to drive talk radio to the Internet, fundamentally change its economics, and retard its growth for years hence.
But none of these changes will cure the depression. It will end when the private sector works through the high debt levels that triggered the collapse in the first place. And, then, the large stimulus package deficits will likely lead to rapid inflation, probably necessitating a second recession to cure it. (The intention would be to silence dissenting voices. At this point socialism is too soft a description. I'd dare say communism.)

So Obama's name will be mud by 2012 and probably by 2010 as well. And the Republican Party will make big gains and regain much of its lost power.
But it will be too late to reverse the socialism of much of the economy, the demographic change in the electorate, the rationing of healthcare by the government, the surge of unionization and the crippling of talk radio. (Sigh, sigh, sigh -- Hope and Change deconstructed.)(Source) - Commentary CBW's

I know this is probably impossible, but what if we could get a ton of people to mail their checks back to the White House when we get them? Tell the President our country is worth more than $1000.00 to us. I'd do it.

Great comments on an interesting article, CBW.

The problem I have with Morris' assumptions is his use of "free market" and "socialism."

Western European nations like Sweden, Germany and England are NOT "socialist economies and America's is NOT and has NOT BEEN a "free market" economy since around 1912.

Socialism is founded on the ABOLITION of PRIVATE PROPERTY and free markets are UNREGULATED markets.

What we and Western Europe have is a REGULATED Market-based economy.

Within the regulated market-based economy there are two schools of thought, lying at the opposite ends of the spectrum.

The Supply Side school favors MORE market, LESS regualtion and low taxes.

The Keynesian school (after John Maynard Keynes) favors more government management of the market, more regulation, a larger "social safety net" and higher taxes.

So, "socialism" and "free market" are both widely misused terms and Dick Morris adds to that here.

Barack Obama appears to be a diehard Keynesian. So was Richard Nixon, LBJ, George Bush Sr. (Bush-41), Jimmy Carter and G W Bush was largely a Keynesian (he LOVED government spending).

Only Ronald Reagan and the Clinton-GINGRICH combo were true Supply Siders! The Gingrich Congress was the ONLY Congress in the past 100 years to actually CUT the federal budget and that was responsible for all those surpluses and some of the LOWEST Misery Indexes (the inflation and unemployment rates combined) since WW II.

Among the strongest supporters of some kind of “Universal (government managed) health care are America’s businesses and industries! Personally, I believe that there will be some move toward nationalized health care (America’s businesses no longer want to be saddled with that responsibility and government doesn’t want to allow that untaxed compensation to exist any longer...even McCain campaigned against that tax-free benefit) but it will come along with allowing individuals to purchase their own supplemental insurance, and YES, that’ll make poorer people subject to rationing, while more well-off people may avoid that.

I also believe that “Fairness Doctrine” will be defeated, or if not defeated, so written as it can...and will be able to be used to force Liberal outlets to give equal time, perhaps even proportional (and there are twice as many Conservatives as Liberals in America) representation of Conservatives on those outlets.

Look, bottom-line, Conservatives must (1) recognize that IDEOLOGY is more important than Party and (2) they MUST learn to use the media and make real inroads into media ownership, which has been dominated by Leftists, mainly Corporate leftists for decades.

Dick Morris is an interesting guy, but he’s got a lot of things wrong in this piece, in my view.

Oh CBW,

You do realize that the recession and tanking economy is the result of Bush's unfettered "free market" policies, don't you?

And you're asking for more?

More of the Buch legacy.

Sprint cutting 8,000 jobs.
Home Depot cutting 7,000 jobs.
Caterpillar cuts 20,000 workers.

Well, after the last near 30 years of supply side economics, I don't fear a little balance, some aspects of socialism are necessary even in a capitalistic system. Somethings, just shouldn't be profit driven, and the markets have once again proved to not be best left to govern or police "themselves", especially in the financial services industry.

This statement:

"too many of us are morally degenerate and too many of us are willing to blame all of our pathology on slavery, George Bush, the Republican party or anything but our failures as Parents, Husbands, Wives and Christians."

I believe that this statement has merit, however, it isn't an either or from my vantage point. Society and particullarly our govenrment, which should represent society, has its own specific and important part of our social contract. Individuals have their responsibilities, so does society.

While I can admit many individuals buy into a victim mentality, society often time is structured to help make consumers and workers victims.

Just saying...

Do you think that this is race specific?

It's kind of obvious that CBW and most other black conservatives are convinced that it is.

@Uptown:

You asked: "Do you think that this is race specific?"

Race specific? Hmmmm. That depends. Race can be at least an agitating factor for how society handles things, it is one of many factors, and once it has been identified, the individual has to be prepared to navigate life in spite of such obstacles.

My main point of contention with Democrats and by mutual implication the “left”, is that often, people like Jesse Jackson Sr, Michael Eric Dyson and White Liberals have a habit of wanting Blacks to remain perpetual victims, and reinforcing that mentality, for the sole purpose of keeping them in their base.

My main point of contention with the GOP, aside from its almost institutionalized racist views on Blacks, is that they act as if a tax cut or a “work hard” speech addresses systemic problems of classism in this country, further, they often seel out to corporate interest things that should NOT be left to markets or predicated on profits (i.e. health care, prisons).

Last but not least....

Uptown Steve~Obviously moral degeneration, parental, spousal and christian failure are not RACE SPECIFIC...(why must I explain the obvious) But I am A black, Christian, Wife and Mother and therefore my concern is for BLACK PEOPLE. Tell me why is it a bad thing for me to notice that things aren't perfect in "Our communtity" and I'd love for things to get better?

Oh yes, I have not "disconnected" from the black community, so there is nothing to rationalize. But if I am self-loathing as you have asserted why would I feel compelled to rationalize separation?

DJ Black Adam said...

Sorry Uptown I didn’t answer the OTHER Half of the question:

I wrote: “While I can admit many individuals buy into a victim mentality…”

Which you asked:

“Do you think that this is race specific?”

Of course not. It is utilized on different ways on different people. White males who join the Neo-Nazi’s, etc. feel that THEY are victims and people utilize that to recruit them.

With African Americans, as I stated, the left perpetuates this within the Black Community, often times done so by some of our own “so-called” Black leaders, however, I would not count Barack Obama as someone who is trying to add to that, in fact, I believe quite the opposite from our president.

Aww, this is out and out GARBAGE.

Explain to me how Democrats, particularly during the Obama campaign reinforced a "victim" mentality among blacks.

Race was hardly even mentioned outside of black men being singled out by Obama for lectures on responsibility.

Adam, black folks don't need Jesse or Dyson to tell them what their realities are.

I aint mad at Jesse, Al or Dyson for remaining vigilant and letting racists know that somebody is always watching and gonna make some noise if they act up.

How that translates into a "victimhood mentality" I'll never figure out.

DJ Black Adam said...

You have to excuse knee jerk reactions to when you state what is painfully obvious. There are serious internal problems that need to be addressed from WITHIN the African American community, simple and plain. No matter how simple or plain, it is painful to see the actuality our collective ahs become, not just African Americans, but Americans in general.

I think most African Americans are like most Americans, working and trying to keep their heads above water.

I think even Uptown would have to agree with that.

I feel disconnected from many African Americans, and it is clearly because of value system differences, but I am disconnected from many Americans who aren't Black, for the same reason. I think the AA community has bought into this capitalistic greed based C.R.E.A.M. (as the Wu Tang Clan would say) society, and because of our small numbers, the result of rampant materialism, misogyny and greed are more apparent.

Jesse, Al and Dyson tell Blacks their problems are the “White man”, rarely (if ever, aside from a Fathers day service at some Baptist or COGIC church) addressing the internal problems that MUST be dealt with, and dealing with what WE have control over, simple and plain.

Such an argument is Inane. NO, WE must do better for OURSELVES rather the rest of the world follows, WE are responsible for OUR children, WE cannot afford to do things that some others do, we have a much shorter trip to the bottom. Basic sociological – fiscal actuality.

You wrote:

“BTW Juan Williams is a bottom dwelling mercenary who actually was a Jackson advisor when it was hip to be so and then sold out to rightwing when THAT became fashionable.”

Juan Williams is basically a liberal, the fact that he has intimate knowledge of JJ, Sr., only cements his credibility to me on that subject.

JJ, Sr., Rev. Al, Dyson, etc, come up with good phrases, but platitudes are meaningless, even the Gospel of the Kingdom are words with POWER.

Lest look at some of your “direct questions”:

1. “Adam, black folks don't need Jesse or Dyson to tell them what their realities are.”

Didn’t infer, imply or suggest they did. I did say that Jesse and Co. have been selling Black folks out to the Democrats since the 70’s for no good reason, at the least they should have demanded some meat on OTHER black peoples plates besides there won for their 40 pieces of silver.

2. “Explain to me how Democrats, particularly during the Obama campaign reinforced a "victim" mentality among blacks”

Motis Operandi for the Democratic party, that didn’t change with Barack running, the only thing that MAY change is that Barack, not beholden to the Civil Rights hustlers, actually does some things to alleviate poverty which could have positive affects on the AA community.

Example? Since you talk about Jesse, let’s talk about the democratic fiefdom that is called: “The Chicago Public School System”.

While Jesse and Co. are calling for the inner city schools to have “pools” like their suburban counterparts, the conveniently ignore rallying the PEOPLE to demand accountability and a better curriculum for the students that DEMOCRAT RUN system is failing.

Jesse, Meeks, and the Chicago Civil Rights hustlers work up votes for Daley and the Democratic machine of Chicago, Cook County and Illinois, and they get the AA community NOT MUCH and NEXT TO NOTHING in return.

You know, I've always wanted for there not to be any hip-hop, BET videos, and corner boys so that these "people" can't use them as a smokescreen and diversion from our REAL problems, just so they can be faced with where they have been wrong all along. But alas, those things will always be the diversions that they must use to hide from the truth of this country and its role in the world and our lives.

Bottom line, if young Black men were taught the message of the Gospel of the Kingdom of God, and did INTERNALIZE THAT MESSAGE (the difference between religion and spirituality is that religion deals with outside, spirituality deals with the INSIDE), you WOULD see a significant POSITIVE change in the community.

Still more nonsense.

These are my problems with black conservatives.

a. Providing a mouthpiece and shield for white racism.

b. Using fake or cooked statistics as well as twisted logic to buttress arguements singularly focused on so-called "black deparavity".

c. Relationships with racist or white supremacist organizations.

d. Absolute failure to recognize or acknowledge black achievement

e. No vested interest or representation within the black community. Even though you claim to "love us" so much.

f. cynical use of racially charged issues for exposure and profit (the same things you acuse Jackson and Sharpton of)

g. The culture of black conservative victimology.

This is right after you depict the black community as barely domesticated animals and accuse us of being responsible for every ill that aflicts America.

"I did answer it, you just don't like the answer. If Latino schools or White schools have the same problems as Black schools is irrelevant."

You show me how a hispanic barrio school is any different than an inner city black school.

The schools out in my black suburban area are outstanding and sending kids to colleges like the Naval Academy, Univ of MD (my alma mater) and George Washington Univer where my son is currently in the MBA program.

What you ridiculously describe as "black" problems are socio-economic problems.

The black middle class has the same values and behavior of middle class people of any hue.

What is wrong with you people?

Fire departments are government agencies funded by the tax dollars of citizens and homeowners like myself so regardless of race I expect them to do their jobs.

It doesn’t MATTER, unless Blacks and Latinos want to compare note son how to make it BETTER.

You continue with: "The schools out in my black suburban area are outstanding and sending kids to colleges like the Naval Academy, Univ of MD (my alma mater) and George Washington Univer where my son is currently in the MBA program."

That’s great, how about those school adopt an inner city school or failing schools in other Black Suburban communities that aren’t doing as well.

You conclude with “What you ridiculously describe as "black" problems are socio-economic problems.”

Not quite. I'm not suggesting that RACE is the problem, but a MENTALITY perpetuated by the LEFT.

For example, Matteson, IL, predominately Black suburb of Chicago, income information is as follows (information from the Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council):

2006 Est. Tract Median Family Income $93,081, Percentage of population that is minority 72.66%

Now lets look at a similar size Community, Tinley Park, IL, predominately White suburb of Chicago, income information is as follows (information from the Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council):

2006 Est. Tract Median Family Income $82,338.81, Percentage of population that is minority 9.86%

The School System for Tinley Park, IL (School District 146), this is how they did per State of Illinois standards, From:

http://www.district146.org/generalinfo/Report%20Cards/Illinois%20District%20Report%20Card.pdf

As of 2004, the schools testing overall percentages of state test scores categorized as meeting or exceeding the Illinois Learning Standards for your school, district, and the state. These performance measures include only test scores for the grades and subjects (reading, mathematics and science), this districts meeting or exceeding: 79.4% state average was 65.2%.

Now let's look at predominately Black Matteson, IL School district (School District 159) this is how they did per State of Illinois standards, From:

http://www.dist159.com/PDF%20docs/Report%20cards/District%2005%20School%20Report%20Card.pdf

As of 2004, the schools testing overall percentages of state test scores categorized as meeting or exceeding the Illinois Learning Standards for your school, district, and the state. These performance measures include only test scores for the grades and subjects (reading, mathematics and science), this districts meeting or exceeding: 62.3% state average was 65.2%

Conclusion? The predominantly Black Matteson area’s median income is: $93,081 and the percentage of students that meet or exceed the standards of the State of Illinois is 62.3% which is BELOW the state’s average. Whereas the predominately White Tinley Park has a median income of: $82,338.81 and the percentage of students that meet or exceed the average of the State of Illinois is 79.4% which is ABOVE the state’s standards.

These South Suburban Chicago towns are right next to each other, and if everyone were inside the house and you drove through them, you wouldn’t know the difference looking at the superficial, lawns, houses, etc.,etc. So, is the problem Income? Obviously not. Both school systems are funded similarly by Cook County Property taxes. The people in Matteson are paying more in fact and getting less. Instead of listening to people blame the White Man, they need to get off of their arses and demand some accountability in curriculum. Simple as that.

Now of course this is a sampling, a microcosm, but I would bet this is similar in DC, New York, Detroit, Atlanta, etc., etc. Black Parents need to stop being "inspired" by politicians words and charisma and start getting some meat on their plates. Step up and demand a high curriculum so that Black students be prepared to succeed collgiately.

Sorry, I didn't say "Fireman or Fire Person", if you were trapped in a fire, no way out and some random White person could resuce you, would you let them. THAT is the question.

How do you propose this relationship to be viable?

Where do the inner city schools place?

Isn't being rescued from a fire some what of an allegorical strech from eternal salvation?

I also think that you're suggesting that I am anti-white which is ridiculous.

I have white people in my family as well as several very dear friends.

Which is why I KNOW that they are no different than we are.

No better or worse.

I think black conservatives are still struggling with that fact.

Well, that explains alot. You clearly don't know any black conservatives and clearly have not read this blog beyond he profile.

So if you wish to wallow in misinformtion as it pertains to me because of my ideology then so be it. I was hoping we could dialogue reasonable but I see that you would rather ignore me (ON MY DAMN BLOG) nonetheless as you I am in your opinion "disembodied". What a smug little radical you are.

Calm down my sista.

I apologize for calling you names.

You actually are pretty cool given the fact that I wasn't banned for my initial hostility, so props to you.

I'll be civil from this point forward.

Black conservative blog overload I guess.

"What a smug little radical you are."

CBW, there is nothing "radical" about me.

I am a 49 year old husband, father, veteran, homeowner, software salesman, beer drinker....you name the banality, I live it.

I just get sick and tired of conservatives depicting black folks as this outgroup furiously resisting being part of the American mainstream.

It's ridiculous.

We ARE AMERICA.

Barack's election is now the universally recognized STAMP of that fact.

Most of us are just out here trying to make it, pay our bills, love our kids, and live our lives in peace.

We are NOT the thugs on videos or on "The Wire".

Don't you see?

DJ Black Adam said...

@Uptown:

"How do you propose this relationship to be viable?"

It's a simple move, of show and tell, or rather show and prove...Each one teach one, the good schools you are blessed with can help set up curriculem and other programs with the not-so good schools. Share what works.

You asked (regarding Jesus): "Isn't being rescued from a fire some what of an allegorical strech from eternal salvation?"

If the Bible is correct, salvation rescuses one from eternal fire, so the analogy seems to work.

Thanks for at least admiting, you're only racist, when dealing with spiritual saving not physical...

Uptown Steve~I apologize for losing my temper as well. I don't view all black people as thugs.I am well aware that segment of our community is a miniscule minority. I just believe that as a community we have lost our way (not everyone). Most of my friends and family are working, own homes, care deeply for their children, are involved and are pro-active as it pertains to their children's education. But their is a segment of our community that does not value marriage and that's a problem not only morally (I don't want to sound like a super-saint because I'm not)but economically and the fiber of our families are falling apart because of this. OK, so I know white folks dont value marriage either and its not just a racial thing. But I'm not concerned about white folks (as much)I care about black folks. I care about my daughter's future husband prospects. I also have several girlfriends who are phenomenal(sp) women who are single --problem!

Lets talk...Attorney Mom would like to do a podcast with the three of us -- I'm in, DJ Black Adam is in, what about you Uptown? Constructive Feedback & Brother Komrade (actually you scare me) would you join us as well?

CBW

"I just believe that as a community we have lost our way (not everyone)."

I disagree with this.

I think most black conservatives are nostalgists who keep referring to a time in America when blacks were humble peaceful content little angels.

BEFORE CIVIL RIGHTS LEGISLATION.

That's the white racist argument..ie..the worse thing that happened to blacks was that the liberals got to them and made them dysfunctional.

CBW ever since there were urban centers you had an underclass.

Did you read Malcolm X autobiography about rampant crime drug use promiscuity and dysfunction in urban ghettos during the 40s and 50s????

If things were so great for blacks during the "old days" then what was the Civil Rights revolution all about?

What was the need for it if we were so content?

The poverty and illiteracy rates for blacks in 1960 was upwards of 60%. Today it's around 21%

Once the legal obstacles were shattered, most black people moved solidly into the middle class.

What we have in the inner city is a stagnant, isolated, dysfunctional underclass which is just perpetuating itself.

That has nothing to do with race and everything to do with lack of access to a decent education, positive role models and jobs with livable wages.

The question for concerned Americans is what are we going to do about that?

Give cheap "poundcake" or "just do it" speeches or make a real committment to rebuild the inner cities?

Anonymous said...

Adam,

I don't hate 'em either and have said nothing to suggest that I do.

I was discharged a YN1 in the United States Coast Guard.

1980-1987.

Served on the CGC Dallas, at USCG Headquarters in Washington, Group Sault St. Marie, MI and 9th District office in Cleveland, OH.

"So how do you explain them the "dysfunction" within our community? Or do you feel that all is well."

As I just stated the dysfunction is among the inner city underclass.

My black suburban neighborhood is indistinguishable from it's white counterparts except for the color of the residents.

Let me ask you something.

Do you feel, because you are black, that you are more likely to be criminal or dysfunctional than your white co-workers or associates?

If so, why?

If not, why do you racialize dysfunction?

Conservative Black Woman said...

"Do you feel, because you are black, that you are more likely to be criminal or dysfunctional than your white co-workers or associates?"

Absolutely not.

"If not, why do you racialize dysfunction?"

I don't I just don't give a damn about about the other races and what they do (gosh, that sounds racist). Heres and analogy -- If my daughter is failing miserably in school as a consequence of socializing too much; because of my love and concern for her as her parent I exact discipline. She is bone of my bone flesh of my flesh-- I care, she is mine. Likewise, when MY People don't function is ways which benefit US as a people -- I blog about, point it out in hopes that someone will see things differently. It has nothing whatsoever to do with white people. It's about us!

lol, The Air Force reserves was an interservice transfer because the Marine Reserve unit I was attached to was moved when the base closed.

So haven't done the Army, couldn't stand the Air Force, so I figured the Coast Guard was still a Naval service, not as hard charging as the Corps, but I think I'd be a pretty good officer...

Believe me I've heard all the jokes about the CG.

"shallow water sailors"

The CG is the only branch of the military that has a full PEACETIME mission..ie maritime law enforcement, aids to navigation, drug interdiction and search and rescue.

On top of that, in times of Congressional declared war, the CG is assumed under the Department of the Navy and engages in combat.

The number of Coast Guardsmen who lose their lives every year conducting these peacetime missions is a secret that is kept from the American public.

The cutter I served on lost two men while rescuing the crew of a damaged tanker off the coast of Nova Scotia.

We were shot at by a Bahamian freighter transporting illegal drugs.

The CG ain't no picnic my brother.

I am sure it isn't, I wouldn't be wanting to serve as an officer in it if I thought they were light.

I am first and always foremost a Marine, but I look forward to serving with the Coast Guard.

I respect all of the Armed Forces, and especially the Naval Services, I think the members of the Coast Guard are some of the finest sailors in the world.

Sector Lake Michigan where the Chicago area is located is one of the hottest and busiest Coast Guard sectors.

See if you can get a billet at Station Wilmette Harbor or Calumet Harbor.

You'll get all the action you want.

I find it amazing that this country is inches away from economic calamity, and there are STILL individuals whio cannot think outside of the limted dogmatic mindset of "liberal vs. conservative." The best thing conservatives (and liberals to a lesser degree) can do is to stop trying to govern based on dogmatic ideology and create policy based on the needs of the people...otherwise, we're all going to be "begging"..."Socialism or not. Self-righteousness and sanctimony are poor substitutes for policy proposals.
