PSBO's Stimulus Good For Government....Not So Much For the Economy

Government-friendly solutions for every problem. When you're a hammer everything looks like a nail.

Part of the problem is that Americans look to government for solutions to everything. But governments are comprised of lawmakers and bureaucrats. They only have so many tricks up their sleeve.

People need to be helped to understand that big government will make their lives worse, not better.

Question for CBW

Are you Elizabeth Wright?

The "conservative black woman" who wrote a defense of the Confederacy?

Okay dude.

Explain to me how "big government" got the economy in the current mess it's in.

It was just the opposite.

Deregualtion and little oversight.

But, but, tax cuts for corporations totally work! We don't need money for infrastructure -- it'll trickle down! Somehow. Don't ask me about specifics, I'm not an economist. But I know that creating jobs and strengthening roads and bridges is wrong! Rush Limbaugh told me so!

I'll be listening tonight. Can't wait.

UptownSteve~I am not Elizabeth Wright. Although I have been meaning to read that book (I think the title is appalling...but she may teach me something)

Big Government got us into this mess with the creation and expansion of the CRA. It was during the Carter Administration and it was a good thing. It was expanded with the Clinton Administration and it went south from there. It wrote about this in detail in a post entitled The Audacity of Hope-o-crisy here is the link:

http://conservativeblkwoman.blogspot.com/2008/10/audacity-of-hope-o-crisyan-explanation.html

You will find that I agree with you that deregulation was a problem but the democrats in the house cried racism when George Bush and later John McCain suggested that Fannie and Freddie should be regulated (The above referenced post contains a video of the house dems having a hissy fit)

BrotherKomarade~I don't know if tax cuts for corporations totally work -- But I do know that heavily taxing corporations doesn't help. Companies are in business to turn a profit if they are heavily taxed they will not ultimated pay the cost their employees will in the form of lower wages or reduced benefits or the consumer will because they will charge more for the product produced.

Infrastructure strenthening is a good thing sure jobs will be created and the economy will thereby be stimulated not argument from me -- I don't care what Rush says. But some of the items included in the proposed stimulus package are proposterous and stupid. Contraception and Sexually Transmitted disease research to name a few are not economic stimulators.

Or businesses will just plain leave the state and/or country. To that end both employees and consumers lose.

But Bush cut corporate taxes and deregulated them and they left, downsized or went under anyway.

CBW

"I am not Elizabeth Wright."

Thank God.

'Cuz I think the woman has deep psychological issues.

They've done that nayway, Zabeth. How long has tax breaks and corporate welfare been a benefit for Dupont, Michelin, Shell, etc.?

So what is your solution as opposed to "they'll just do it anyway." If business will leave either way is it better to just to nothing? I'm really curious, what would you propose instead?

Yes corporate welfare does exist, but we can't act like heavy taxation won't alter people's behavior either and that situations exist in a bubble. Like it or not, business leave for more friendly waters when they cannot turn a profit in certain territories. Isn't that part of the reason why European automakers like Mercedes Benz have set up plants in the US- it's too expensive to operate in Germany. Or why customer service operations are sometimes moved to India. Perhaps the real question is how do we find the happy medium.
